(I have been looking for a way to have 80 characters wide terms, which for i3, would mean a way to have columns whose width is determined in the configuration.

I'm working in a 80 characters columns style environment, and the inability to get 80 columns terms is the only thing preventing me from switching to i3. I'd like to be able to specify that when a term is launched with Ctrl-Enter, it should have whatever width I have configured. I'd also like to be able to resize the current column anytime by forcing it to that configured width.

I don’t see how this fits the i3 philosophy. Fixed window widths are a thing for primarily floating window managers, not primarily tiling. Therefore closing as wontfix.
