(LibreOffice now offers on Linux the Presenter Console, a way of showing your slides on an external screen while reading notes on the local screen:

https://www.libreoffice.org/features/impress/

The Presenter Console tries to find out about internal/external screeens but it fails with i3 (only the internal screen view is shown). When pressing on "SWITCH", which should switch between internal and external screens, some refreshing takes place, but nothing actually changes.

I tried awesome, I get a different but equivalent problem.

In that case, you get both windows (presenter console and presentation) but messed up if you start up the presentation from the external display, only presenter if you start up from the local screen.
